Precautions must be taken to stop Hendra virus

Shadow Health Minister and veterinarian Duncan McFetridge is calling on the State Government to test flying foxes for Hendra virus.
“There is a small flying fox population in South Australia and I would be surprised if they were not carrying the Hendra virus,” Dr McFetridge said.

“About 30 per cent of flying foxes in the eastern states carry Hendra virus and we need to know what proportion if any of those in SA carry the virus. We must start testing them.

“While the risk is small the threat is real and it is a national issue.

“Horse owners must be alerted to the clinical signs of Hendra virus so as to give it attention immediately and prevent any spread.

“Hendra virus outbreak is now a serious problem in Queensland and New South Wales.”
