Oaklands Railway Overpass – another cruel hoax for local residents?

Dr Duncan McFetridge, Member for Morphett, has been fighting on behalf of residents and motorists for more than ten years to have a grade separation at Oaklands Crossing.

Daily congestion has worsened due to increased traffic from the State Aquatic Centre, the neighbouring GP Plus Clinic and stalling tactics by Labor to build an overpass at this nightmare intersection.

“The State Government’s delay to address congestion, by planning for a grade separation, has seen the estimated costs for this project blow out and millions of dollars has been wasted on short term solutions such as moving the train platform a few hundred metres,” said Dr McFetridge.

“The Government’s window-dressing of the problem fails to conceal the underlying shambles of the whole intersection. It is an absolute debacle.

“Labor has already wasted $6 million on building a new railway station and this announcement will see it demolished.

“For more than ten years I have consistently called on the Government to reinvestigate this whole precinct and I advised them to never to build the station at this location if a grade separation was to be built in the future.

“Now we see another $2 million spent to come up with a ‘cartoon’ of what was always the answer.

“Once again there is more delay, more incompetence, more money wasted, no plan, no timeline and no budget.

“If Labor had consulted and listened to the residents from the start, and developed a real plan for this intersection, we wouldn’t have the huge traffic congestion problem that we have today.

“This announcement is just another of Labor’s cruel hoaxes to pretend they are providing a long overdue solution to the mess that is Oaklands Railway Crossing,” said Dr McFetridge.
