Shark Fear Factor Ruining Our Local Tourism

With three shark sightings this week along local beaches, local Member for Morphett, Dr Duncan McFetridge MP, is renewing his call for enclosed swimming enclosures.

“This week alone, there have been three shark sightings at Somerton Park, Glenelg and West Beach,” said Dr McFetridge.

“Swimmers and tourists who were swimming and enjoying the spring heatwave reported to me their distress and their panic in swimming along our metropolitan beaches.

“Swimmers were distressed because they were told by Surf Life Savers that they had to get out of the water because there was a shark nearby.

“They want to feel safe and they don’t feel that current measures provide that level of safety.

“Aerial shark patrols and the Surf Life Savers do an excellent job, but they are only partially effective and unfortunately it’s just not enough.

“Shark patrols will not provide a 24 hour a day 7 day a week protection for swimmers.

“I have been calling for a swimming enclosure at Glenelg Beach to protect swimmers from sharks for many years and it’s time that the Government considered this seriously.

“Families need an area where they can swim, free from the fear of sharks off the shore at Glenelg. Protected swimming areas operate successfully in many areas interstate.

“The Government can’t continue to ignore this issue.  With the increased number of shark sightings along our beaches the fear factor rises every year and people will stay away from the beach. It significantly damages our tourism.

“These enclosed areas are not kilometers of netting, but small areas where families can swim with piece of mind.

“A safe enclosed swimming areas is a small price to pay for the value of a life; I don’t want this to be a summer with a shark tragedy on the suburban beaches along the coast,” said Dr McFetridge.
