Local Member calls for dive wreck at Holdfast Bay

State Member for Morphett, Dr Duncan McFetridge MP, has called on the State and Federal Governments to locate one of the decommissioned naval vessels, either HMAS Tobruk or Sydney, offshore in Holdfast Bay as a dive wreck.

Last week the Minister for Defence, Senator Marise Payne, announced that the decommissioned vessels, ex HMA Ships Tobruk and Sydney will be offered to the States and Territories for the creation of dive wrecks.

Dr McFetridge has written to both the State and Federal Governments urging them to consider situating one of the dive wrecks within Holdfast Bay which could potentially contribute more than $4 million annually to the local community.

“There is an enormous need in South Australia to create jobs and a dive wreck would assist in generating much needed tourism and related jobs within my electorate and in South Australia,” said Dr McFetridge.

“Holdfast Bay is South Australia premier tourist destination and is an ideal location to sink either the HMAS Sydney or Tobruk as a dive wreck.

“This proposal has a great deal of local support, particularly from small businesses and the South Australian diving community.

“We need to be on the front foot trying to create employment, tourism and economic opportunities within the State and this is one opportunity that the State Government should be taking up,” said Dr McFetridge.
