Oaklands Railway Crossing

I have presented 5 petitions since 2006 (785 signatures) and spoken a number of times on the issue (refer to my speeches in Hansard).

I now encourage people to sign the City of Marion petition which can be found here - Oaklands Crossing Petition.

A growing number of residents in the Morphett electorate are signing a petition to express their concerns about the traffic issues at the Oaklands Railway Crossing, where it intersects with Diagonal and Morphett Roads.

The best solution to end the traffic congestion at this major intersection is to include a grade separation, that is, an overpass/underpass.  It needs a complete redesign which will incorporate the integration of buses, private vehicles and trains so as to have a continuous and uninterrupted flow of traffic to this precinct.

The current traffic congestion problems will only be multiplied when the expansion of the Westfield Marion Shopping Centre, State Swimming centre and GP Medical Centre are completed.

This location is well overdue for a complete redesign of the intersection and I continue to lobby the Minister for Transport and State Government to do something as a matter of urgency.  This has been an eight-year campaign I have been working on, as a local member of parliament, and I hope it will be taken seriously and action is taken soon.

There have also been unacceptable traffic delays due to the government’s failure to maintain these boom gates and problems in the traffic signal sequencing.

I am calling once again for the State Government to reinvestigate this whole precinct which includes Diagonal, Morphett and Dunrobin Roads and the railway crossing.

The Government’s window-dressing of the problem, by moving the train platform a few hundred metres, fails to conceal the underlying shambles of the whole intersection, including the physical surface problems of the crossing. It is an absolute debacle.

I think it was nearly 25 years ago when the original $1 million plan, as it was then, to have grade separation there was first brought up. The former Liberal Government at least took into consideration businesses and local residents who utilised the train services and had a future plan for grade separation.

If you feel strongly about this issue and want to assist me in having a stronger voice then join my lobby campaign and sign a petition.
