Free Light Globe Recycling Scheme

Just a reminder that used light globes should not be placed in the kerbside recycling bin.  A free, environmentally-responsible program run by Zero Waste SA enables householders to drop-off used light globes for recycling at the checkout counter of any Mitre 10 or True Value hardware stores throughout South Australia.  This ensures that globes will be recycled instead of going to landfill and prevents mercury contained in some globes from harming the environment.

Under the BackLight Household Light Globe Recycling Program globes will be pre-processed in Adelaide and then sent to a facility in Sydney where the materials will be separated:
• the aluminium and mercury will be used to make new light globes;
• the phosphor powder into fertiliser; and
• the glass will be re-used into a variety of other glass products.

Tubes and globes can also be dropped off for free at Local Council household hazardous waste collections or the Hazardous Household Waste Depot at Dry Creek.  For further information visit the Zero Waste SA website at: www.zerowaste.sa.gov.au, or call (08) 8204 2051.
